What I Would Do If I Was Just Starting Out On My Health And Wellness Journey

When I was beginning to navigate my own health and wellness journey, I was confused on what to actually do. I had no idea how to feel or look my best, which was my ultimate goal. I experienced a lot of ups and downs because I didn’t exactly know where to aim my focus. I had no idea what habits to integrate, especially when it came to food. After reaching my goals and establishing a healthy lifestyle that I truly loved as well as after becoming a Holistic Health Coach several years ago, it became clear to me what went wrong and what went right on my own journey.

There is no doubt that you will have some bumps on your journey, but you can lessen the challenges by aiming your focus on the main things that will help you build a healthier lifestyle with more ease. I learned many lessons over the years of struggling to reach my goals. Looking back, I realize that if I had focused on these 7 things, I would have set my self up for success and reached my goals with more ease and with less challenges:

Focus on adding in more whole foods to every meal

This means focusing on adding in the foods like real and whole fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, high quality protein, healthy fats, etc. Make those the star of your meals rather than something that has been heavily processed. When you fill your plate up with whole foods, you will notice how you have less room on your plate for the other foods like processed foods. Plus, you will notice how much better you feel after meal time when you are focusing on eating more whole foods.

Prioritize home cooking and meal prep

Preparing your food at home has big benefits. It is extremely hard to control what goes on your plate when you are eating at a restaurant or at someone else’s home. Instead, focus on where you have the most control, which is your own kitchen. You don’t have to avoid eating outside your home, but it is important to minimize it. It also helps to meal prep foods ahead of time to help you avoid take out.

Prioritize daily movement

You should be moving your body all throughout the day. Movement is so important for a healthy metabolism, better sleep, muscle loss prevention, heart health and more. I recommend creating a fitness routine that you enjoy. This could even be spending just 10 minutes a day working out, making an effort to go on a daily walk and prioritizing getting up and moving around throughout the day.

Create a morning routine that help you be a better you

What you do in the morning affects your entire day and your wellbeing. Get clear on how you currently spend your morning and the time you spend doing mindless activities like scrolling on your phone. Aim to add in a few healthy habits that will help you have a better, less stressful, healthier and more productive day. I personally love starting my day with a walk and a vitamin and nutrient rich breakfast.

Prioritize positive habits

Many of us try to aim our focus on cutting out bad habits, however I believe it is a better use of time and energy to focus on adding in more positive habits. This means adding in healthier eating habits, more self care habits, healthy movement habits & more. Make a list of all of the habits that you can add in today that you know will impact your mind , body and soul in the most positive way.

Find an accountability partner with similar goals

One of the best things you can do is don’t allow yourself to go about your journey alone. This one thing is one of the most important thing you can do. If you feel lonely on your journey, it will only set you back. You need community to help hold you accountable, help you push through challenges and keep moving forward on your journey. This could look like inviting a friend to a weekly workout or a lunch date at a healthy spot or making new friends who share a similar goal. This should be a person you can talk to about your journey and someone you can relate to when it comes to health and wellness.

Invest in a health coach

This can be the most life changing thing you can do for yourself. Like an accountability partner, a health and wellness coach will help you stay accountable on your journey. Plus, a health coach is your guide for creating the healthy lifestyle you desire. This helps take away the confusion around what you should and shouldn’t be doing (as well as eating) and it helps you avoid or overcome challenges with more ease. Having a health coach on your journey will help you navigate things like nutrition, fitness and other healthy habits.
