Tips To Building A Routine You Love

Building a health and wellness routine can be the most life changing thing you do but also tricky for many. Many of us begin adding habits to our routine and not long after quit on them. There are many reasons why this happens and a big reason is because we don’t actually enjoy them. Often many of us try adding a habit to our routines only to find it’s not enjoyable (and even if you spent years doing it you still wouldn’t love it), you don’t have time for it or you don’t have the resources needed to work on that habit effectively. Health and wellness should never be stressful. If you ever find yourself stressing over completing your habits and routines then it’s time for a change.

These are some of my top tips to building a routine that you love:

get clear on your goals

Getting clear on your main goals will help to filter out the habits you don’t need so you can focus on the habits you do need in your routine. It can be easy to get caught up in habits that we see others doing but they might not be meant for you or your goals.  Write down a few main goals for yourself and the habits you need to support them.

let go of things that you don’t truly love

If you don’t love certain foods or workouts, then let them go. Just because something is deemed healthy doesn’t mean you have to have it in your life. Your routine, as well as your life, should be enjoyable. There are other foods, workouts, meditations, etc. out there for you to enjoy. I always remind my health coaching clients that building a routine means choosing habits rather than just having habits. You are in control and you get to choose the habits to want to work at. Also, keep in mind that in order to reach your health and wellness goals you need to stick to your habits longterm, so you might want to make them something you enjoy doing daily.

start small

With any habit, whether it’s healthy eating or working out, you have to start small and build on those habits. If you try to go full throttle it will backfire. Completely changing your lifestyle at once can often be unenjoyable which makes it impossible to stay consistent which you need to reach your goals.

focus on adding in rather than taking away

Focus on adding healthy habits into your routine rather than focus on taking things away. If you put the majority of your focus on removing unhealthy habits from your life while trying to incorporate healthy habits you might end up in a negative place. Focus on adding in healthy habits and slowly overtime those old habits will fall away on their own naturally. Remember that energy flows where your intention goes.

choose habits that you can give your time and energy to without added stress

If you don’t have the time or energy to complete a habit, don’t start it or try to find other ways to complete the habit. Your habits need to work with your lifestyle, if they don’t then it will be impossible to stick to them. Choose habits that you want to put your energy towards as well as habits that you have time in your schedule for.

stick to habits that are available to you

If a habit is causing you to spend money you don’t have then it’s not for you. Creating a healthy lifestyle should never ask you to live outside of your means. On top of that, your habits should never cause you to go out of your way to complete them. Habits should be accessible to you otherwise they will just become a stress in your life.

Keep in mind that enjoyment can often take time when starting new habits and that your habits should push you and challenge you too.
