Crispy Sweet Potato Fries
I don’t think I could ever get sick of sweet potato fries. I am not a big fan of mashed sweet potatoes, but I am a very big fan of crispy sweet potatoes.
Sweet potato fries do not need much, I honestly prefer them with salt only. But for perfect and crispy sweet potato fries, you will need to give them some love during the cooking process.
There are 4 important factors that I found to be vital for perfect crispiness:
Soaking
Separating
Flipping
Broiling
Soaking your potatoes before cooking is important. Soaking potatoes helps to remove excess starch and lets the potatoes absorb moisture which creates crispy outsides and a moist interior. I soak my pre cut potato slices for 30-45 minutes (in clean & filtered water) prior to baking. Remember to pat your slices dry with a clean cloth after soaking.
Another vital step is to make sure your sweet potato fries are separated during the baking process. The space between each fry can be minimal, but there needs to be some space between each fry. Separating your sweet potato fries guarantees there with be crispiness along each side of the fry.
Flipping your potatoes is another important step. I always flip each potato halfway through baking. This will ensure that you get even crispiness on the top and bottom of the fry. I know this part can be tedious, but it is important to a good fry.
The last thing you will want to do is broil. When the timer hits 2 minutes left, I hit the broil button. If you like it extra crispy, it is important to broil for 2 minutes. Do not broil any longer or you will get burnt fries!
Enjoy!
Yields 2 servings:
Ingredients:
1 sweet potato cut into slices
salt to tastes
avocado oil spray or 2 tbsp avocado oil
Directions: Place your sweet potatoes in a bowl of water. Let your sweet potato fries soak for 30-40 minutes. Then preheat your oven to 400. Once your sweet potato fries are done soaking, drain out the water and pat your sweet potatoes dry with a dry clean cloth. Next, line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place your soaked/dried sweet potatoes on the pan, drizzle with oil and salt. Then toss around until oil and salt are evenly distributed. Then separate your sweet potato fries and lay them flat on the pan (I like to create rows of potato fries to make it easier when flipping). Place in the oven and bake for 20 minutes. Remove from oven and flip each fry. Place back in the oven for 20 more minutes. Broil the last 2 minutes. Remove from oven and enjoy!
