How to Build a Holiday Decor Collection & My 2020 Holiday Decor Picks

The Holiday Season is approaching and that means it is almost time to decorate!

Christmas was always a big deal in my home growing up. Every year we would pick a day after Thanksgiving and we would all spend half the day decorating. Our home was like a holiday wonderland inside... It was the BEST! So when I finally moved into my own home with Bobby, I wanted to keep that holiday decorating tradition going.

Buying holiday decor on top of Christmas shopping can be costly. If you are hoping to one day have your home decked out in Christmas decor, you may not be able to to it all at once. My tip when it comes to holiday decor is to build your collection slowly over the years (especially because decorating trends change over the years too!) I buy 1-3 items (depending on price) per year.

When I am shopping for decor for my home, I make sure to do it mindfully and intentionally. This way I don't end up purchasing a bunch of items that I can't afford.

First- Set your budget!!

Second- Find your vibe. Do you love neutrals, things with cute sayings, figurines, greenery? This is why I love Pinterest! I love saving holiday decor looks on Pinterest that I can recreate in my own home. Pinterest is the perfect tool for finding your personal style.

Third- Pick a section in your home that you want to decorate. I recommend starting with the area you see the most. For example, I start with the TV area in my living room. When I sit on my living room couch (where we do most of our hanging out when we aren't in the kitchen) I want to be able to see my holiday decor. So this is typically where a mantel or media stand would be! I start in this section and purchase items based on this section! I might buy a garland for the mantel, a few small glittery trees, and a few figurines. Then the next year, I will pick a different section and buy 1-3 items for that one!

Fourth- Do you really love it?! Don't bring it homeless it brings you true joy! I know those $5 bins can be tempting, but $5 adds up quick. Before you know it you spent $100 on items that you don't really love (and you could have just bought that beautiful flannel throw blanket you were eyeing for the past month!) Keep in mind where you are decorating, and if you don't LOVE it, do not buy it!!
